Bob Dylan is a man who loves his reversals...and one of my favorites is a song I truly cherish, “She Belongs to Me”. This is such a quintessential Bob Dylan love song; in fact it is hardly a love song at all. It subverts the idea of what love songs ought to talk about, and in a few verses expresses emotions both complex and pure. There is a lot of possessive language involved with talking and writing about love, and the title indicates this is just another one of the countless love songs you don't have to think a lot about.

But of course, it's Dylan, so he's being ironic: he describes a woman who belongs to no one but herself in matters intimate and vast ("she's nobody's child, the law can't touch her at all").

If anything, the narrator is the one who belongs to her. Not only that, but the narrator has willingly and proudly subjugated himself to her in this song. He would do anything for her. The narrator’s one-sided devotion is described in terms that are in turn both religious and sexually suggestive ("Bow down to her on Sunday, salute her when her birthday comes", "You will start out standing...but wind up peeking through her keyhole down upon your knees”). But Dylan also suggests that her feelings for the narrator don’t run as deep; he likens her view of him as being similar to an inanimate object or artifact one might collect.

In terms of inspiration for this song...well, are always plenty of women coming forward to take credit for being the muses of famous love songs. But practically speaking, I think it’s far more likely that Bob got one part of his inspiration from “Betty and Dupree”, a folk song from the 1920s that was popular among the folk revivalists Dylan spent a lot of time with in the early 60s. Thematically, this song is a straightforward story about a man who is so in love with a woman he robs a jewelry store for her and is later executed for his crimes (there’s the ring, the ‘proud to steal her anything she sees’, and the ‘law can’t touch her at all’).

The other part of his inspiration, I do think, is Joan Baez. I was thinking about this song when he says this of her in his Musicares speech from 2/6/15:

Joan Baez is as tough-minded as they come. Loyal, free minded and fiercely independent. Nobody can tell her what to do if she doesn't want to do it. I learned a lot of things from her. A woman of devastating honesty.

If there is such a thing as having a theme song in real life...well, I don't think this could describe me at all. But that first line--I think I would like to aspire to it:

Moved to my new place on the Upper West Side this weekend and managed to make it home to NJ for half a day before having to run back to Manhattan when they closed all the mass transit for Hurricane Sandy. It seems surreal, because with the TV and AC fan on I couldn't hear anything outside. Stepped out for a jog (I know, I know) this morning by CPW and there are a ton of downed trees. Other than that, everything is good. Power intact. No school for the indefinite future and there is no way for me to get back to NJ since everything besides the buses are down. But I have power...and Zabar's is still open. LOL. KNISH FIX

NYU Langone (hospital where I have class) was flooded and their generator died. So upsetting to see everyone evacuating patients in darkness.

Family is okay, but power is out.

Saw "Chicago" today. Was most impressed by......how cut all the dancers were. New life goal: lose every (EVERY) ounce of fat on my body, seriously.

One of the biggest impediments to my enjoyment of this musical was, as I thought it would be, the fact that I've always considered almost every character to be completely unlikable (especially Roxie, who might be one of the most annoying protagonists I've ever seen). Oh, and they get away with murder, but that's okay, because the only point of this show is entertainment. Morals got nothing to do with it; now enjoy watching these pretty people get everything they want!

As for the musical numbers, I really did not like most of them. -_- The famous ones from the show were fine, but the ones in between just sounded like a lot of noise. :-/

Also: "Suits" AU where Harvey Specter is Billy Flynn. I WOULD READ THIS.

I want there to be a boy band TSN AU. Obviously, the name of their band will be "Facebook". Obviously.

Eduardo is the cute/sensitive one
Dustin is the funny one
Chris is the serious one
...and Mark is just the jerk the smart one.

Due to creative differences/UST/angst, Eduardo leaves the group. Some kind of Nightwish replacement thing occurs where they replace Eduardo with Sean (the BAD BOY), and Facebook does just as spectacularly as they did before, but there will always Team Eduardo vs Team Sean wankfests between the different fan camps. Eventually there is private reconciliation b/w Eduardo and Mark, that inadvertently becomes less-than-private reconciliation between Eduardo and Mark, visible hickeys are made, and the tabloids go crazy. THE END

(Ratio of Tumblr posts made to LJ ones made...pretty sure it's in the range of 100:1)

BEST Erik ever. This story is so beautiful, but oh, so painful. BRB, gotta pick up the broken shards of what was formerly my heart of stone that is now strewn all over the floor.
